Becoming champion isn't always hard work.

Professional wrestling might not be a legitimate combat sport, but it still follows a similar reward structure. Championships are the highest accolades on offer, and much like Steven Gerrard's football career will forever be blighted by a lack of Premier League winners medal, people will also lament the lack of WWE Championships for Jake Roberts, Owen Hart, and many others.

In any walk of life, winning a championship is immensely difficult. It takes years of belief, years of training, and years of dealing with hardship to get in a position merely to challenge for one. Blood, sweat, tears, and a whole lot more are expended in the pursuit of glory, that moment when all of your work pays off and you stand on top of your mountain.

Either that or your boss gives it to you for the crack.

Yes, there have been a whole host of occasions in the wonderful history of pro wrestling when a performer has become a champion almost on the whim of authority, men and women who became the number one individual in their division without winning a match. Heck, one name on this list became champion after losing a match.

Remember kids: to be a champion you need to put in the hard yards day and night, never give up. If that doesn't work, keep an eye on rubbish bins.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
