10 Times Wrestlers Went Totally Off Script

It's my way or the high way.

WWE fans are forever bemoaning the rigid confines within which their favourite stars must operate when they have a microphone in their hands.

By insisting they adhere to a pre-written script, the argument goes, Vince McMahon has strangled the personality, and everything that made the Attitude Era so special, out of his once cutting edge product.

There's truth to this argument, evidence for which can be found in the failed campaign to make Roman Reigns - who never seems entirely convincing when delivering his Comedy Central Roast lines - the company's next breakout star.

It's equally fair to say, however, that deviating from the beaten path isn't always a good idea, particularly if your experiment is going out live to a global television audience.

Some of history's biggest stars have been on the receiving end of a dressing down after deciding, in their wisdom, that they know better than the suits that write the show.

And while they may have been made to regret their actions by their bosses, they have also largely succeeded in giving the fans a few of wrestling's most unforgettable moments.

10. CM Punk Puts A Fan In His Place

As CM Punk himself pointed out, fans are free to shout what they like when they pay their money for a seat at a WWE show. Equally, though, wrestlers are free to call them out, mid-promo, for being rude and obnoxious.

That was what happened on the post-SummerSlam 2013 edition of Raw, when a visibly agitated Straight Edge Superstar decided that he wasn't going to let a loud-mouthed member of the Anaheim audience eat into his precious mic time.

There can be little doubt that this moment was unscripted. If it hadn't been, said fan would likely have born an uncanny resemblance to an NXT rookie, and joined Punk in the ring after accepting his challenge of an impromptu clear-the-air scrap.

Plus: Punk used naughty words, a privilege normally only reserved for the likes of John Cena, The Rock, and Brock Lesnar who - as we know only too well - have always been a few rungs above the former ROH star in the pecking order.
