It wasn't Batista's fault that he was treated like a complete tool by WWE fans at the 2014 Royal Rumble.

Had it happened at a different time away from Daniel Bryan-led hysteria, his comeback and Rumble victory might even have been cheered. Batista, whether anyone likes it or not, entered a solid performance on the night and didn't do much wrong. It's WWE's creative team who must take the blame for how hard his win flopped.

They were the ones aware of a paradigm shift in the promotion, and they also knew anyone other than Bryan (y'know, the guy who had been swimming upstream for months against The Authority) pointing at that WrestleMania XXX sign would disappoint everyone. WWE chose to ignore that to their - and Batista's - detriment.

Overnight, his own babyface moment was ruined by circumstances outwith his control. He'd been booked in the wrong spot, at the wrong time and at the expense of a more popular hero. In other words, big Dave was thrown to the wolves.

Or goats.
