10 Times WWE Pulled The Trigger (When You Least Expected It)

9. Kevin Owens Wins The Universal Title (Monday Night Raw, 2016)

From one unfortunate relinquishment to another. However, this championship vacation led to a moment of unbridled elation.

After Finn Bálor tore his shoulder to pieces in his SummerSlam 2016 vanquishing of Seth Rollins, the next night he sadly announced that he would have to give up his newly won big red belt.

Fans were disappointed to see their chosen hero struck down by injury, but WWE had a plan up their sleeves and it involved an epic fatal four-way for the Universal title a week later.

That match saw Kevin Owens, Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns and Big Cass (remember him?) all vying for the top prize on Raw, with a further elimination stipulation being added into the mix.

As the match unfolded, it looked for all the world as though either Reigns or Rollins would resume their place as the company's top dog, but then - out of nowhere - Triple H appeared and took both of them out of the hunt for the world title.

This left the door wide open for a stunning Owens victory and the crowd erupted at the realisation of the former Kevin Steen finally being positioned as a top star.

His subsequent title run wasn't as incredible as we'd have hoped, but that takes nothing away from an excellently crafted trigger-pull which none of us saw coming.
