9. Randy Savage's Departure

When Randy Savage left for WCW in 1994, taking his lucrative SlimJim endorsement with him, an ashen faced Vince McMahon directly addressed Raw viewers of the reasons behind the popular Macho Man's absence. After noting that Savage was "unable to come to terms for a new contract," McMahon bid his long-time servant farewell, wishing him good luck in the future.

McMahon's comments on Raw left fans with the impression Savage's departure was fueled by greed. In actual fact, the Florida native was desperate to remain with the company, but had grown tired of his commentary position and wanted to resume active competition. With Vince more interested in pushing the 'new generation' of talent in a post-Hogan era, Savage was left with no choice but to take Eric Bischoff's offer and head to Atlanta.

McMahon was clearly deeply hurt by Savage's exit, and this was evident in his graven, almost spiteful announcement. Between the lines, his real message was clear: Savage's time with WWF was finished for good.

So it proved: The Macho Man never made another appearance with the company, and his name remained taboo until his eventual Hall of Fame induction following his death in 2011.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
