10 Times WWE Purposefully Lied To The Fans

We the audience are expected to believe that the predetermined, choreographed matches we see every week are legitimate sporting contests and that the wrestlers genuinely dislike each other and are totally not working together to tell a story. That's all good. It's a lie we can live with. What about characters and gimmicks? We are lied to every time the Undertaker makes his entrance and we are expected to believe he is some sort of mythical demon or ghost or whatever. Again we can live with that. It certainly makes for more compelling television than acknowledging that Mark Calaway is a just a grey-bearded fifty year old, with a messed up shoulder. We're all wrestling fans, we expected to be lied to. Then they go too far. There comes the inevitable moment when we the audience are given a taste of something wonderful, something we'd be willing to money for. Then when we hand over the money, we learn the truth. Wrestling promoters are essentially liars. From those soulless bastards in the old carny days who would stoop to the lowest depths of hell to sell a gimmick, to Vincent Kennedy McMahon who would stoop even lower, wrestling was founded on "working" the audience. And the sad truth? We fall for it every time. Here are ten examples of when the WWE knowingly and intentionally sold us lies...

As a wrestling fan I've flown across the Atlantic for the last five years specifically to attend WrestleMania (28 and 30) as well as TNA, ROH, Evolve, Chikara and most recently PWG. I may have a problem! But if you're reading my work then you probably love wrestling too, so lets focus on that!
