10 Times WWE Wasted Potentially Epic Storylines

The Summer of Punk, Nexus, Matt vs. Edge, and many more...

Throughout WWE history, there have been many gripping storylines. They live on in the memories of thousands, not necessarily for the fantastic in-ring action they included, but for the way they made us feel. Equally, there have been storylines so appalling, they're remembered with just as vigorous a level of disdain; even the words 'Katie Vick' or 'Kennel From Hell' can fill a wrestling fan with instant dread. The storylines we're about to take a look at lie somewhere between these two extremes. They could have been part of the first category, but through stupid booking decisions, mishaps by the wrestlers themselves, or sheer bad luck, they ended up sliding more towards the second. There's something poignant about each of these storylines, a sense of blown potential. Each could have become a defining moment in a superstar's career, maybe a whole group of superstars (and maybe even an entire era) - but instead they fell by the wayside. Here's a look back at what could have been...

10. Vince McMahon's Illegitimate Son

The illegitimate son angle is now primarily remembered as an overblown storyline reduced to a cheap punchline, the aftermath of which lasted only a few months. However, it could have been used to launch the career of one of the most promising young talents on the roster. The original plan was to have Mr. Kennedy revealed as Vince's illegitimate son, the beginning of a major singles push. Instead, Kennedy failed WWE's wellness policy, earning himself a suspension in the process. Rather than delay the angle - as they surely would have done in the case of a more established superstar such as Randy Orton. The writing team instead shoehorned Hornswoggle into the role, sacrificing a very promising storyline for a series of poor comedy skits (including a horribly insensitive imitation of JR's Bell's palsy). Who knows where Kennedy would have ended up had the angle proceeded as it was supposed to? He could have been a corporate heel champion, or a rebellious babyface going against his father's wishes. Instead, he was released from his contract less than two years later.
