10 Wrestling Storylines That Started Hot But Ended Terribly
9. Edge, Lita, And Matt Hardy
Ideally, the Edge/Matt Hardy/Lita love triangle storyline would've put Matt over as the biggest babyface in the business, and his foes as two of the most reviled heels around. It was only partially successful.
Edge and Lita emerged from the situation with previously unthinkable levels of heat. The real-life drama turned wrestling story helped slingshot 'The Rated R Superstar' towards the top of the card, and Lita was so besieged by the crowd's hatred that WWE had no choice but to transform her into the company's arch villainess. Both came out looking great, but sadly, Hardy did not.
The feud began when Matt uncovered an off-air affair between his girlfriend and former on-air rival. Hardy was injured at the time, and WWE knew they had to do something to combat the drama. Deciding that Edge was the bigger star, they cut Matt lose, amplifying their audience's immense sympathy for Hardy, who'd done nothing wrong.
Matt became a major cult hero among the fanbase, and he was eventually brought back to television, prompting another huge surge in support. Unfortunately, WWE completely failed to take advantage of this by having Hardy constantly lose ground throughout, culminating in an October 2005 loss that saw him banished to SmackDown. Had he gone over in the end, the rub could've sent Matt's career stratospheric, but alas.
