Maggots.

After a six-month build, in which Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton went from rivals to partners to rivals again, their feud was ultimately overshadowed by projections of maggots that were plastered across the canvass. Really.

One of the most drawn-out stories of the year degenerated into a glorified special effects show, when just 90 seconds into Wyatt vs Orton – a WWE Championship match, no less – the camera cut to a bird’s-eye view, showing a mass of maggots projected onto the mat below. In fairness, the trick was initially applauded. Second time around, not so much. Upon seeing it happen a third time, most people had already stopped caring.

The stop-start action was in stark contrast to a dramatic build that had seen the pairing go from feuding with one another to winning the tag titles, with Wyatt shunning Luke Harper for Orton, only for the latter to reveal the whole alliance had been a ruse before burning down the Wyatt Family compound and essentially disbanding the faction.

A ten-minute match, regularly interrupted by some hocus pocus light show, wasn’t the pay-off that backstory needed.
