10 WWE Superstars Who Are Totally Underutilised

Was it Brock Lesnar who broke the streak or Paul Heyman?

WWE.comWWE.comWWE may experience its €˜ups and downs€™ quality-wise, but, on the whole, it is usually worth a watch. At its best, it is must-see pop culture viewing and, at its worst, it can be downright embarrassing. Still, I love WWE and, if you€™re reading this article, the chances are that you do as well. Right now is an exciting time to be a WWE fan, as it seems that the company is embarking on a brave new era. They have a roster absolutely jam-packed with white-hot young talent and, (when he eventually returns to action) they have a bona-fide phenomenon-waiting-to-happen in Daniel Bryan. Yes, things are definitely looking up for the world€™s biggest wrestling company. However, it€™s not all a bed of roses. Dodgy booking decisions, sub-par writing and a total lack of opportunity for career advancement is regularly hampering a great many WWE stars, most of whom could be so much more than they are allowed to be right now. As a lifelong fan of the company€™s product (and of wrestling in general), it is frustrating to watch this happening. There are company veterans that ought to be able to bow out on a high note and scrappy youngsters that need to be given a properly orchestrated push, oh and there€™s one announcer in my list, too. Here are a few opinions/suggestions on how to better utilise some of the WWE€™s best veterans and upcoming talent...

10. Brock Lesnar

WWE.comWWE.comIt is nothing short of unforgivable that Brock Lesnar, having been routinely given the greatest gifts in the history of the WWE (pinfalls over the biggest stars, championships by the bucketload, an army of jobbers falling at his feet, a lucrative part-time deal and, of course, victory over €˜The Streak€™) is not on WWE TV right now. Instead, as ever, the world€™s greatest heat magnet Paul Heyman is putting the big guy over like a million bucks, without him even being there. Let€™s get one thing straight; Lesnar doesn€™t love the wrestling business (and he never did). Which is fine. He makes money and that€™s what counts in wrestling at the end of the day. MMA is popular right now and WWE is willing to pay through the nose for (former UFC Champ) Lesnar€™s unique cross-sport appeal. Lesnar, for his part, is purely in it for the big WWE Pay Per View Paydays and little else. He is a supreme athlete, that much is undeniable, but, in my opinion, he is also a perpetually disappointing performer, largely because his matches never involve the crowd in any way whatsoever. Furthermore, although his moves are often spectacular, he has little, if any, grasp of the psychology it takes to really make those moves count. For Lesnar, a veteran and part-time player (who is already as over as he is ever going to be) to defeat The Undertaker at WrestleMania was (and continues to be) a total waste. In addition, the fact that he then packed his bags and went home for months on end was woeful, woeful booking. The contractual or €˜backstage€™ reasons for this are immaterial; Brock is simply not being used correctly by WWE. He should be on TV, being pushed as the monster that broke The Undertaker, not at home in the gym, or watching telly with his feet up. Whatever your thoughts on €˜The Streak€™ ending may or may not be, surely you are disappointed that no storylines were born from it whatsoever? The only guy to really profit from it was Heyman, a non-wrestler.

I am a professional author and lifelong comic books/pro wrestling fan. I also work as a journalist as well as writing comic books (I also draw), screenplays, stage plays, songs and prose fiction. I don't generally read or reply to comments here on What Culture (too many trolls!), but if you follow my Twitter (@heyquicksilver), I'll talk to you all day long! If you are interested in reading more of my stuff, you can find it on http://quicksilverstories.weebly.com/ (my personal site, which has other wrestling/comics/pop culture stuff on it). I also write for FLiCK http://www.flickonline.co.uk/flicktion, which is the best place to read my fiction work. Oh yeah - I'm about to become a Dad for the first time, so if my stuff seems more sentimental than usual - blame it on that! Finally, I sincerely appreciate every single read I get. So if you're reading this, thank you, you've made me feel like Shakespeare for a day! (see what I mean?) Latcho Drom, - CQ
