Jeff Hardy, in the summer of 2002, had reached something of a cross-road in terms of his career prospects. Three Hardcore titles, a Light Heavyweight title and Intercontinental title were now firmly under his belt but he had yet to really break out as a singles contender.

After teasing an angle with the former Hardy Boy in the middle of a brother vs. brother storyline (with real life sibling Matt), The Undertaker finally got his hands on Hardy properly in a ladder match on Raw for the Undisputed WWE Championship. It bears remembering, at this time, that the Deadman wasn't the man churning out classics the likes of his initial and later run from '06 to '14 would have you believe. No, this Phenom had seen his standards drop and it took a scuffle with the Enigmatic Enigma to realise that.

Although the ladders played to Hardy's strengths, the two went back and forth to a scale that even suggested the young star could dethrone the legend. 'Taker would eventually claim the win, Hardy coming desperately close to his inaugural World title, yet this match stands as a testament of the talent the distinct youngster would grow into in years to come.

For a veteran whose standards had slipped and a youngster yet to wrestle his first star-making singles bout, this TV match had no right to be this good.
