If you just awoke from a coma with nothing but your knowledge of professional wrestling in tact, and you tuned into Monday Night Raw this week, you might be forgiven for thinking we're only a couple of weeks removed from WrestleMania.

WWE seems to be pulling out all the stops for its upcoming No Mercy show, where Brock Lesnar will defend his Universal Title against Braun Strowman - a match we've been waiting months to see - and John Cena will take on Roman Reigns.

Both of these encounters could comfortably close out next year's WrestleMania. In fact, many theorised for a while that at least one of them would - but the company's hierarchy plainly have other plans.

No Mercy, like Unforgiven, No Way Out, and Backlash, is rarely a venue for new and exciting match-ups between top-level stars. Instead, you can usually expect to see rematches and the odd transitional title feud between a newly-crowned champion and an obvious placeholder challenger.

This wouldn't be the first time B-shows have hosted WrestleMania-worthy encounters though: there are one or two examples to be found ever since monthly pay-per-views became the norm twenty years ago.

We should be happy about the fact we're just a few weeks away from finally seeing Brock Lesnar lock horns with Braun Strowman, a match with which WWE has been teasing us for the better part of 2017.

And yet there's a tinge of disappointment that it won't be at 'The Grandest Stage of Them All', mainly because it means the encounter likely to take its place is Lesnar versus Roman Reigns, whose WrestleMania showdown two years ago so spectacularly failed to capture the fans' imagination.

Let's look on the bright side, though: this is a 'Mania-sized encounter between two immovable objects - a match so finely poised that it's impossible to call - and one that most would happily see headlining the biggest show of the year.

For No Mercy - traditionally the most forgettable of all B-shows - this is off the scale.
