11 Terrible Fourth Wall Breaking Wrestling Moments

The fourth wall is an imaginary wall that separates the audience from the actors in films, television and plays. When we watch WWE, we’re supposed to believe in the world they've created during the time its on. All shows do this. Everything from Game of Thrones to Seinfeld play within the confines of their own narrative structure. If on Thrones, Jon Snow winked at the camera after his night with Ygriette and said “Looks like I do know something” he’d be breaking the fourth wall. Very few shows can get away with that, wrestling is not one of them.

Nearly every wrestling promotion has trouble being consistent with their own storytelling structure on a weekly basis. Sometimes wrestlers do look right into the camera, or make an acknowledgement that there’s one there. Other times we see them scheming backstage, unaware that there is cameraman standing right in front of them. A little consistency would be nice, but it's one of the things you just have to accept if you want to continue being a fan of the product; and remain sane.

We’re going to go a little deeper here, and take a look at the times that wrestlers broke character, the inner-workings of the business were exposed on-air or something so outlandish happened that it couldn’t have possibly been a part of any form of reality. This list isn’t about moments like CM Punk's Pipebomb promo, as he didn’t exactly admit wrestling was fake that night. This is for the times when promotions completely disrespected our intelligence for their own amusement. Well I hope that had a good laugh, because we sure didn’t!
