It’s time to write the epitaph for 2016 in WWE, and it’s a complicated one that won’t fit on a simple headstone. It reads more like “A Tale of Two Cities” than anything else.

While there are some honest-to-goodness positives that came out of this past year, it also was a total down year for WWE. Ratings, for instance, plummeted over the course of the year, with the last Raw of 2016 drawing nearly 700,000 fewer viewers than the last Raw of 2015. The post-WrestleMania episodes of Raw dropped by more than 1.25 million viewers from 2015 to 2016. Those are not good signs for WWE as we move into 2017.

We saw the rosters split again, with some small benefits and some drawbacks. We saw several newcomers make their mark, while others got shafted. We saw champs set longevity records and others trade titles almost monthly. And we saw signs that give us reason for hope… and reasons to worry.

There are plenty of items we could list here, but it would become far too involved of a list. Rather, let’s take a look at some of the ups and downs for WWE in 2016. If there are items we missed, please feel free to discuss in the comments.

Let’s get to it…

Monday nights in the Carlson household are reserved for viewing Raw -- for better or worse.
