19 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About Shawn Michaels

11. WrestleMania 10 Ladder Match Only Happened Due His Steroid Suspension

It can be argued that the most famous match of Shawn's career was the Ladder Match for the Intercontinental Title at WrestleMania 10 against his good friend Razor Ramon. The reason they had the match was because both men walked into it claiming that they were the Intercontinental Champion. Why did they make that claim? Because Michaels was suspended for steroid use whilst he was champ. When Michaels was told by Vince McMahon that he was going to be suspended for steroid use in September of 1993, he refused to send him the IC Title because Michaels claimed he was not using anything. Michaels ended up being suspended for six weeks. Michaels returned around the time of that previously mentioned Survivor Series 1993 match where he replaced Jerry Lawler. Michaels brought back his IC Title as he claimed he was the real champion and then they started the build for WrestleMania 10 against Ramon where both IC Titles would be on the line. It wasn't the first Ladder Match in WWE history because Michaels was doing them with Bret Hart at house shows as well as taped matches for Coliseum Video, but Michaels/Ramon was the first that was televised live. Would it have happened if Michaels avoided a suspension? No idea, but the suspension certainly helped the gimmick match make sense because two guys were fighting for the two titles hanging from the rafters.
