3 Ups & 4 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (Mar 28)

Downs...

4. Spinning Their Wheels

SmackDown Women's Division

SmackDown's lazy booking of their women's division continued last night. While the performers were granted a lot more airtime than the previous week, their contributions built little hype for WrestleMania, and only emphasised the idea that the show's multi-woman title match is just an excuse to get as many people on the pay-per-view as possible.

Carmella and Becky Lynch started with a sloppy singles match, before guest commentators Alexa Bliss and Mickie James inevitably got involved. This turned the match into a tag bout, and while given plenty of time, it absolutely stunk. A disjointed, overbooked mess, it featured an interference from Natalya and another from James Ellsworth, before Carmella eventually picked-up the victory, mercifully putting an end to this waste of 10 minutes.

The women's division has been one of SmackDown's biggest assets since the brand split resumed, but they're spinning their wheels at the moment. The current approach seems to be "let's just put them all on the screen at the same time and hope something cool happens," but it's not working, and the lack of care and attention shows. These performers are far too talented for such a haphazard angle, and they'll likely be glad when WrestleMania is over.
