William Regal had the best match of his entire feud with Chris Jericho in the WrestleMania curtain-raiser the prior year, but couldn't replicate the magic with Rob Van Dam own opener 12 months later.

It was some relief to see 'Mr Monday Night' take the secondary title after Regal's lethargic defenses earlier in the year, not least because of an obvious depush he'd endured following the end of the WCW/ECW Invasion.

Like virtually all of his WWE pushes and this very victory, it was another false dawn.
