Storylines are completely meaningless in modern day WWE, which might explain why the aged core fanbase gravitates towards performers who got over when sh*t actually made a lick of sense.

On this week's SmackDown, Shane McMahon added two contradictory stipulations to the show's main event: Kevin Owens Vs. Randy Orton was to be fought under No Disqualification Rules, but Sami Zayn was barred from ringside. No prizes for guessing the finish. Zayn interfered on the entrance ramp in what we presume was a caveat. They needn't have bothered.

It wouldn't have mattered if Zayn had attacked Orton in the ring because no disqualification could take place. That was the f*cking stipulation. What was stopping him? What stopped the Singh Brothers from constantly aiding Jinder Mahal over the summer months?

"It's just wrestling."

"Turn your brain off."

"Don't be so pedantic."

WWE runs these finishes to forge a route to the next show, on which more nonsensical bullsh*t invariably happens. WWE's sports entertainment, as Stephanie McMahon is fond of pointing out, is apparently comparable to the great works of Shakespeare - as if the bard would book a run-in that was at once prohibited, excused and pivotal to another abysmal retread of an authority figure storyline.
