4. Dream Match Becomes Nightmare

Think of your ultimate dream scenario for Shawn Michaels' in-ring return.

Did you bite the tease at Hell In A Cell 2013, expecting Daniel Bryan to tap Shawn Michaels out at WrestleMania XXX as payback for that title-losing Superkick? Did you buy into the idea of a defensive Michaels returning at the 2017 Royal Rumble in San Antonio to prove that his supposed successor, AJ Styles, needed to beat the man before he became the man?

Did you think, no, I don't want to watch an incredible inter-generation dream match. I want to watch a bald Shawn Michaels wrestle slow exchanges with f*cking Kane in utter Botchamania fodder?

Lucky you.

This match, all arrogant 27 minutes and 48 seconds of it, was the very manifestation of the careful-what-you-wish-for adage. Shawn Michaels returned to the ring, and it was sh*tty. And you thought 2017 was weird, with all that Jinder Mahal as WWE Champion stuff. In 2019, we are on course for the Undertaker and Kane to wrestle an Iron Man match, once the Saudis reach 1996 in their chronological run-through of the WWE Network.

Triple H tore a pectoral muscle. Kane's mask and wig fell off, mirroring wonderfully how the whole thing fell apart. The Undertaker, meanwhile, sold more for a stray bit of his own hair than he did for Diamond Dallas Page in 2001. 'Taker has often been compared to movie characters: Michael Myers, the Pale Rider.

On November 2, 2018, 'Taker entered the Ernie McCracken phase of his career.
