James Ellsworth never looked, acted, or sounded like a traditional WWE Superstar. That was what made him such a popular figure with the fans. In a Universe where Roman Reigns is booed for being seen as Vince McMahon's hand-picked successor to John Cena, of course the fans are going to get behind someone completely opposite to him in almost every way.

The term gets thrown around a lot in WWE, but James Ellsworth was the epitome of the ultimate underdog. Neither he, nor his character, should have made it as far as he did. He didn't come through NXT, and he didn't have "the look", but that just made him all the more appealing as an everyman character. What better way to for James Ellsworth to end his WWE tenure than to be beaten soundly by Becky Lynch and then having his head kicked off by his girlfriend / dog / slave / did anyone understand what he was supposed to be, Carmella?

While intergender matches have fallen out of favor in the WWE over the last decade or so, they used to be more commonplace.
