2017 might not have gotten off to the start everyone wanted with Friday's inauguration of President Trump (that's going to take some getting used to), but if you're a pro wrestling fan, the year could not have started any better.

While New Japan Pro Wrestling's Wrestle Kingdom 11 was renowned as a whole, the show's main event will make January 4, 2017 a date to remember in pro wrestling history.

Kazuchika Okada defended his IWGP Heavyweight Championship against Bullet Club leader Kenny Omega in a battle for New Japan bragging rights. For 46 minutes and 45 seconds, two of New Japan's biggest stars clashed in an epic match that tipped famed journalist Dave Meltzer's five-star rating scale to six stars.

This six-star matchup had every element of a classic pro wrestling match: storytelling, psychology, suspense, and high stakes. From the slow build to its thrilling end, this match left the 26,192 Tokyo Dome spectators in awe and dropped the jaws of fans worldwide.

Despite being on the receiving end of a heart-stopping Dragon Suplex off the top rope, Okada was able to clip the wings of Omega's One-Winged Angel, land a final Rainmaker, and retain the promotion's most prestigious title. Following the loss, Omega announced plans to step away from Japan for a while – leading to speculation that "The Cleaner" may be headed to WWE.
