February 20, 1978: Won WWWF Championship from Superstar Billy Graham, New York, NY January 1, 1980: Was reigning WWF Champion coming into decade November 23, 1994: Won WWF Championship from Bret Hart, San Antonio, TX Backlund took over Bruno Sammartino's role of virtuous babyface champion that could get down and dirty with New York's most deplorable villains.
