May 21, 2001 saw one of the greatest matches in Monday Night Raw history as Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho defeated Triple H and Steve Austin to capture the WWE Tag Team Championships.

Though their reign would be short lived, lasting only 29 days, it featured an iconic Tables, Ladders and Chairs match against The Hardy Boyz, Edge and Christian and The Dudley Boyz. That match, one of the greatest in the history of SmackDown, gave fans a taste of the quality of matches they could expect from the Canadian Chrises.

More importantly, the status of the tag titles was elevated significantly as Benoit and Jericho feuded with Austin over the WWE Championship. The titles headlined shows and were integral to the top program in the sport. When they lost the gold, the championships instantly returned to the status quo, part of a midcard picture that was crowded with singles stars and used tag teams primarily as a feeder system.
