7 Reasons It's Time For CM Punk To Make His Wrestling Return

The Cult of Personality has been gone too long.

Despite CM Punk stating on several occasions that he will never return to a wrestling ring, fans and pundits continue to clamour for the return of the Straight Edge Superstar.

While there are arguably just as many reasons why CM Punk shouldn’t return to WWE (they fired him on his wedding day, for one), there’s plenty of money to be made in both sides swallowing their pride and letting bygones be bygones.

Besides, stranger things have happened. In the last six months alone, WWE has introduced a Cruiserweight Title, a United Kingdom Title, Goldberg has returned to squash Brock Lesnar twice, and WWE Hall of Famer Donald Trump has become President of the United States.

Wrestling is all about surprises, about moments of ‘pop’, and it’s hard to imagine a moment eliciting as thunderous a reaction as the return of CM Punk. It’d set social media on fire, for one, and would see both new and lapsed fans’ eyes glued to the product once more.

We may have to wait for hell to freeze over first - but here are 7 reasons why CM Punk should return to wrestling as soon as possible...

7. WWE Isn't The Be All, End All

The current professional wrestling market is wider and more varied than it has been in over twenty years, and while there are no direct competitors to the WWE a la WCW, there are plenty of smaller promotions carving out niches of their own.

CM Punk has gone on record saying that he will never set foot in a WWE ring again, but that doesn’t mean he can’t set foot in another ring. Kenny Omega, AJ Styles, Kota Ibushi and Will Ospreay are just some of the many wrestlers who have proved that it’s possible to become a big name outside WWE, and CM Punk has a head start over all of them.

Punk made his now lucrative name in wrestling, and while it’s unlikely we’ll see ‘Chick Magnet Crunk’ showing up in the Impact Zone anytime soon, he could easily lend his impressive skills and name value to carrying a smaller promotion. He’s mad at WWE and Vince McMahon, after all, but not the wrestling business as a whole.

Imagine a splinter wrestling federation owned and operated by CM Punk; it’d be an instant draw, and would be a space for Punk to air his legitimate grievances against WWE. This would arguably increase his value as a performer, a personality, and as a brand - because if there’s one thing WWE hates, it’s highly popular wrestlers that they can’t sign.
