7 Things You Should Know About WWE Royal Rumble 1993

1. Yokozuna's Win Capped Off A Very Boring Rumble Match

This was one of the worst Royal Rumble matches ever. It went 1:06:35. It's one of the longest Rumbles ever since all the intervals were actually two minutes and it just felt like it was never going to end. There were some terrible names that were a part of it. Remember in the 1992 Rumble when I said it might have been the best roster WWE ever had? Well, this one might have been the worst. That's how different it was. A big problem with this match was it really lacked heated feuds. The crowd couldn't get too excited for anything because of the lack of build for a lot of the interactions in the ring. There were so many new wrestlers or guys that had no business being in there that the fans just didn't care enough. Sorry to the legendary Max Moon, but it's true. Bob Backlund was the second man in the match and lasted 61:10. Backlund was 43 years old and was retired for about eight years before WWE brought him back in 1992. His involvement was pretty limited despite lasting so long. What did he really do? Not a whole lot. There were some decent near elimination spots. His style isn't exciting, though. The only thing in the match that was really that exciting was when Mr. Perfect went after Ric Flair (the winner of the '92 Rumble) and he ended up eliminating him. The crowd was really hot for that since Flair was a favorite to win it again. Flair was out of WWE soon after. The legendary Randy Savage was in the final two with Yokozuna. Savage was one of the biggest names in the match. The finish was odd. Yoko hit the turnbuckle and fell down, which was a big deal because nobody could really knock down the behemoth. Savage took advantage of that by climbing to the top rope to hit his patented Flying Elbow. Then Savage covered him. What? There were no pinfalls in a Rumble match. Yoko ended up pressing Savage up and Savage bumped over the top to the floor for the win. Savage likely did what he was told with the pin attempt, but it made him look stupid to try a pin. http://youtu.be/14-ylUhmh80 Yokozuna was booked very strong in the match. He eliminated the most wrestlers by tossing out seven guys and dominated from the moment he got in there as the 28th entrant. It was a below average Rumble match that was a major letdown after the great Rumble that took place one year earlier.
