Again, this is not to imply that Sycho Sid wasn't over at all. Just that, when you look at the build-up to this show, it's pretty clear that there were several other wrestlers getting the sort of crowd reactions typically associated with the main event.

The two obvious examples here are Stone Cold and Bret Hart, both of whom contested the WWE Championship at the previous month's pay-per-view, In Your House: Final Four and would, in conventional booking, have been better picks for the 'Mania main event.

Sid, for all his limitations in the ring, was a pretty serviceable heel, but in no sense an equal to his opponent. It felt inevitable that The Undertaker would walk out with the belt, leaving us as fans with little reason to go against the former with any real vigour.

Of course, given how unforgettably brilliant the under-card Submission Match shared by Austin and Hart was, it's difficult to have any complaints about the way that things went in the end. We got a drab go-home match, yes, but one of those before it defined an entire era.
