8 Legendary Tales Of Badassery From Steve Austin And Ric Flair

2. Slater Knocks Out Sloth

Aside from being one of the most well-known football players of the 1970s, John Matuszak is also fondly remembered for playing the most famous disfigured giant in film history, Sloth from The Goonies. He was a hulk of a man who was the first pick in the NFL draft, a two-time SuperBowl champion and a competitor in The World's Strongest Man competition. Ric's story is that, while in college at The University of Tampa - with teammate Paul Orndorff, no less - Matuszak was hitting on Dick Slater's girlfriend. Slater, who was still in high school at the time, thrashed the older and larger man right there on the beach. Later on, in an attempt to add insult to injury, Slater left a note for Matuszak at his hotel room that said "Don't come out until you apologize". Variations of this story exist but they all end with Slater putting a beatdown and Matuszak, and most tellings involve him knocking out John with one punch, although it's most commonly told as taking place in a bar rather than at a beach.
