AEW are the wins and losses matter company. On the face of it, this is a welcome change to what we are used to, where winning a match has absolutely zero consequence beyond pounding your chest for a minute after the bell. It went from establishing decency, to potentially revolutionary when Cody announced the possibility of rankings and sports like analytics of the matches and performers.

Sadly, not all of it has materialized thus far. Sure we get a weekly reminder of the win-loss record and now the weekly rankings, but in a very WWE style, they have struggled to enforce their own rules. Darby Allin and Jimmy Havoc faced off in a number one contender’s match for the world title, despite others such as Pac having a better record and Allin having beaten Havoc prior.

Then, Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara were awarded a shot at the tag team titles, despite, you know, not being a proper tag team.

This is rather disappointing because a system where title shots are determined based on recent performances and a fixed metric is in place for measuring and deciding these, is something we have never seen in pro wrestling. This could be where AEW truly stand apart from everything else. Unfortunately they haven’t been able to, ironically, go all in on it just yet.
