To state the obvious, the Royal Rumble match is one of the most important matches of the year in WWE. Winning the match is a major feather in the cap of any superstar, and many true legends of the game go through their entire careers without managing to do it. Chris Jericho, Eddie Guerrero, Kurt Angle, Kane, and others will go down in history as some of the big names who were unable to outlast 29 other competitors.

Despite this, the Rumble has been won by some very worthy competitors over the years, and has often been seen as the final tick of validation a superstar needs before heading off into the stratosphere. Rumble wins solidified Shawn Michaels, Batista, Yokozuna, and others as true main event level stars, whilst confirming the likes of Steve Austin and The Rock as being at the top of the game.

WWE gets it right more often than not, but when they get it wrong with regards to the Royal Rumble they tend to get it very wrong. The last few years in particular have been rough for the Rumble, with a procession of winners who quite simply were the wrong choice, both for the fans and for business alike.

Here are eight times the wrong man won the WWE Royal Rumble match.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
