8 WWE WrestleMania Main Events With Terrible Builds

You can practically taste WrestleMania as we approach closer and closer to the Show of Shows. All the main main are getting set up nicely, and thus far, it looks like WWE will present a pretty stacked card.

Ostensibly, the main event still appears to be Roman Reigns taking on Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship. To that end, they've crafted a nifty angle the last few weeks. wherein Roman has been presented as a WWE company man standing up to a lazy, overpaid part-timer like Brock Lesnar, who is being characterized as a bully who doesn't care about the fans. Whether this gets Roman cheered at WrestleMania remains to be seen ("no" is a solid bet), but credit WWE at least for making the build to this main event something other than "Oh boy, it's another Roman coronation, here we go again."

Point is: whatever thoughts you may have on Roman Reigns or Brock Lesnar, the build for this match has at least made the effort to put a good amount of intrigue into the final product.

That cannot be said for the build, or lack thereof, to these WrestleMania main events...

8. The Miz Vs. John Cena (WrestleMania XXVII)

Whenever the WWE Champion is the third string component to the challenger and a third party who isn't even wrestling, you're in for a bad build. WWE have run into this problem before, but a prominent example in modern fans' eyes was the setup to WrestleMania XXVII's main event, with John Cena challenging The Miz for the WWE Championship.

For his part, Miz had played the role of the cowardly, delusional champion well (it's sort of his forté), but he was faced with the impossible task of standing toe to toe with both Cena and The Rock, who was WrestleMania's host that year.

The whole angle going into WrestleMania had nothing to do with any personal issue between Cena and Miz, but with Rock's disdain for both men, particularly Cena. Here was Miz holding the most prestigious prize in the industry, but he might as well have been chopped liver standing next to two actual superstars. It makes it all the more baffling that, even though Miz was the tertiary character in this storyline, the video package was all about him in his ascension.

The build, like the match and the event itself, was really a confused mess.
