For the most part, martial arts gimmicks don't really work in the world of professional wrestling, unless the performer taking on that gimmick actually has a solid background in one discipline or another. There are exceptions, of course. Guys like Ricky Steamboat and X-Pac went on to great success in the industry while heavily incorporating elements of hand-to-hand combat into their characters.
