The luchador mask is a vital part of the lucha libre tradition. There is rich history and mystique and mythical backstory to each and every mask a Mexican wrestler puts over his head. It's not something that should be ripped off and thrown in the trash for the sake of a cheap storyline.

...If anyone had bothered repeating the above statements to Eric Bischoff back in 1999, it surely would have done as much good as peeing on your foot to relieve the pain of a jellyfish sting. That's to say, it sounds like it should do the trick, but it's been proven ineffective dozens of times. By scientists.

As far as Bischoff was concerned, most of the Mexican wrestlers on his roster - who were busy solidifying his product as something more than an excuse for old, muscular, tall men to spray paint their logo on things and use the championship belt for air guitar - needed to be unmasked in order to gain a couple of ratings points and contribute something to the company.

There was no big lead-up to the unmasking, with Psiscos' buddy Chavo Guerrero putting his mask on the line in a Hair Vs. Mask match for literally no reason. It wasn't a title match. It wasn't even on a Pay-Per-View event. And the manner in which Billy Kidman wriggled the mask off during an awkwardly-executed tornado bulldog just felt...off.
