9 WWE Royal Rumble Tropes That Have Been Perfected

Stop trying to recreate history, WWE.

Hold on to your hats folks, the Royal Rumble is as good as here. The 31st edition (and, technically, the 32nd edition) of the 30-man extravaganza takes place this coming Sunday, with the winner going on to challenge for a championship at WrestleMania. Will it be the ‘Mania main event? Probably not, but winning the Rumble is still a big deal.

What will happen in the match? The usual fare. One individual will enter early and last around 45 minutes, before valiantly running out of steam towards the end. There will be comedy entries and nostalgic returns. At one point, two big guys will face off in the middle of the ring. Someone might give a promo during the match, and there may even be a shock entry at number 30.

The Rumble follows a fairly standard script these days. The problem with this is that all of the standard tropes have already been perfected. WWE will continue to try and recreate magic, but it simply can’t happen. Wrestling has a nostalgia problem, but when everything has already been done better it isn’t hard to see why.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
