AEW Fyter Fest: Cody Chairshot Supposed To Be "Gimmicked"

Dangerous spot had been planned as safe.

Cody suffered a hideous bust head at last night's AEW Fyter Fest courtesy of an unprotected chair shot from Shawn Spears, the copious quantities of blood pouring from his sliced scalp conjuring ugly memories of some of the darker days of the Attitude Era.

In a world of heightened CTE awareness, weapon blows to the head are something wrestling fans absolutely do not want All Elite to revive from the industry's most recent 'Golden Age'. According to sources within the company, neither did they.

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio following the show, Dave Meltzer confirmed Tony Khan's post-show presser that Cody, whilst requiring staples to keep his head closed, did not suffer a concussion. He further noted that the chair in question was "supposed to be gimmicked", speculating that it was a non-modified part of the prop which ended up causing the damage.

The veteran journalist didn't have the full details at present, but mentioned that AEW insiders will be in touch to give a further update - and by extension, PR-exoneration justification for the stunt - in the days to come.

We'd like to believe this was simply a poorly-planned spot which went awry, rather than Cody asking to be opened up hardway. The industry has moved on too much for the latter to be palatable any more.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
