Alberto Del Rio is a Weak WWE Champion...But You Already Knew That
Of course there have been many bad World Champions in WWE's recent past such as The Great Khali and The Miz, however, Alberto Del Rio might be the worst of them all, and here is why.
Alberto Del Rio, was not. Due to visa issues, he was nowhere to be found. And on top of that, he was hardly mentioned on the show at all. But it really was "business as usual", and the show carried on and in reality, nobody really cared or noticed that he was missing. The fact that Del Rio is WWE Champion right now is weak. Of course there have been many bad World Champions in WWE's past such as The Great Khali and The Miz, however, Alberto Del Rio might be the worst of them all, and here is why. First of all, nothing about Del Rio warrants him being a top dog. Is he a good wrestler? Sure. But he's no better than mid-card Raw guys like Dolph Ziggler and Zack Ryder, and look where they are. Being good in the ring can only get you so far. And it is not like I can think of a stellar Alberto Del Rio match off the top of my head. When a microphone is in front of his face, it is as if the viewer was DVR'ing a Del Rio promo from the prior month. His "My name is Alberto Del Rio" catchphrase is just flat out bad, and you can only hear one man talk about destiny so much. First winning the Royal Rumble was his destiny. Then winning the World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestlemania was his destiny. Then winning the money-in-the-bank ladder match was his destiny. Then winning the WWE Championship was his destiny. See what I mean? His promos being centered around saying the same exact thing is just extremely redundant.
Aside from the night he won the title, Del Rio does not garner much of a response from the crowd. Whether it was his feud with Big Show, or winning the Royal Rumble, nobody seemed to care. He got some cheap heat when fighting Rey Mysterio, but he just does not cut it in this area. His reaction is not that much different from Dolph Ziggler or Jack Swagger, and look where they are. He won the belt because the WWE has been behind him from day one. They have not stopped pushing him, and have invested too much in him to not attempt to make him a top player. But so far, it is just not working out, but the WWE will try to ignore that in an attempt to make it work. For Del Rio's sake, staying on Smackdown where they can do audio editing, would have benefited him. This should be a lesson for the WWE in the future. They cannot have someone flounder and be unappealing, win the money-in-the-bank ladder match, cash-in successfully, and be a credible World Champion. With The Miz, he held the US and Tag Titles. Del Rio? He has held nothing. Swagger had been the ECW Champion, but nobody took him seriously as World Champion. With Del Rio? Nobody is taking him seriously, or even cares enough to think about whether they do or not. By David Harris at SportsThrone.Com (Coming Soon)
