In an interview with Ring Rust Radio, Cody Rhodes revealed that the beloved War Games match was supposed to make its grand return at the inaugural Battleground pay-per-view in 2013.

At that show, Rhodes teamed up with his brother Goldust to battle The Shield in an attempt to get their jobs back. It was a great contest, but perhaps could have been even better with the inclusion of the giant cage and two rings.

Rhodes explained why it did not work out:

War Games was going to come back and somebody, and I don't actually know who, so not I'm not trying to be vague, but somebody said 'No it takes up too much ticket space so we aren't going to do the War Games.' So then it became a tag match.

It's a bit of a shame that we didn't see one more round of the gimmick match, as fans have been clamoring for it for years. However, besides the issue of less premium tickets being sold for the show, the concept is not one of Vince McMahon's, so getting him to sign off on it was likely a tall order.

Rhodes also said that he was supposed to come back in a Midnight Rider mask, which was a gimmick his father used when he lost a loser leaves town match. It would have been a nice homage, but the company went a different direction.

Hopefully we see War Games return someday, but it's probably best not to get too excited about it ever coming to fruition.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
