As a result of a victory on Raw, Darren Young - who made his return after months of vignettes alongside Bob Backlund - will challenge The Miz for the WWE Intercontinental Championship.

Monday's Raw opened up with a battle royal, the winner of which would get the coveted title shot at Battleground. The final four men in the ring were Darren Young, Apollo Crews, Dolph Ziggler, and Baron Corbin.

Corbin eliminated Ziggler, but when Crews cut him off, both stars went over the top together. That left Young the sole man in the ring and the winner of the match.

The contest at Battleground will mark Darren Young's first singles title match on Pay-Per-View, though he and Titus O'Neal claimed the WWE Tag Team Titles from The New Day at Money in the Bank. They would lose the belts back to The New Day at SummerSlam.

Darren Young versus The Miz joins an already-loaded card that boasts Kevin Owens versus Sami Zayn, The Club versus John Cena, Enzo Amore, and Big Cass, Becky Lynch versus Natalya, and of course, WWE Champion Dean Ambrose versus Roman Reigns versus Seth Rollins. This will be the last Pay-Per-View to feature interpromotional matches, as the brand split takes effect the following evening on Raw.
