Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson To Star In DC Comics Film

The Rock confirms his involvement with DC Comics, but what character will he play?

The Rock Shazam It's been rumored for some time that Dwayne Johnson -- better known as The Rock of WWE fame -- has been attached to star in a potential upcoming DC Comics movie. That film is to be based on the character of Shazam -- formerly known as Captain Marvel. Shazam made his first comic book appearance in Whiz Comics #2, way back in 1940. Since then the character has largely remained the same, possessing powers of flight, superhuman strength and speed, and the ability to wield magic lightning, among others. Dwayne Johnson has gone on to become a huge box office star beginning with his film debut in 2001's The Mummy Returns. Since then, he has received top-billing in various blockbusters including the ongoing Fast and Furious film series and G.I. Joe: Retaliation. He also recently starred in the Hercules film, and has accrued a respectable resume with his assorted action and comedy roles. While Warner Bros. has yet to officially announce a Shazam film or Johnson's involvement, the film star -- and still part-time professional wrestler -- is currently up for both the title role and that of Shazam's longtime nemesis, Black Adam. Reportedly, The Rock is free to choose which role he would like to play, and continues to debate internally about which role he will ultimately take. Johnson confirmed his involvement with the film in a recent Associated Press interview. Therein he also spoke on his admiration for antiheroes, particularly Black Adam, citing the villain as one of his favorite DC Comics characters. Johnson is hoping to provide a great film for fans of the comic book series, stating that he was "putting heart and soul and bones into this role." Furthermore, it will be interesting to see if Johnson shows up in any DC films before the potential Shazam film. With the Flash rumored to play a part in the upcoming Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, there€™s always the possibility that either Shazam or Black Adam could make an appearance in that film or a future DC universe picture. However, just like the standalone film itself, nothing has been confirmed and should be treated simply as rumor and speculation. It is unclear at this time when the Shazam movie will begin filming or hit the silver screen. Surely, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will play a major part in it when the time comes. What part that is, however, is still up in the air. Which role will The Rock choose to play when the Shazam film finally begins production? Let us know your thoughts on Dwayne Johnson's announcement below.
