WWE chairman Vince McMahon could be about to revive the XFL, according to the Wrestling Observer's Dave Meltzer.

Rumours that the wrestling mogul is interested in dipping his toes back in the professional football market - for the first time since his ill-fated 2001 project - have began circulating this weekend.

Speaking on his Observer radio show, Meltzer stated that the establishment of "Alpha Entertainment" could indeed be an avenue for a relaunch.

Fearing possible stock market ramifications, representatives of WWE have been keen to stress that Alpha will be self-funded and completely separate from the 72-year-old's wrestling interests.

There has been no official announcement that XFL, whose original incarnation was seen by most as a complete failure, is set for a return.

For now, Alpha is just said to be broadly concerned with "investment opportunities across the sports and entertainment landscapes, including professional football".

However, Meltzer went on to state that, within the last month, McMahon has started trademarking the "XFL" name, with possible merchandising uses in mind.

Clearly, the WWE chief is happy for this much information to be in the public domain, his representatives having failed to explicitly deny the rumours when approached for comment.
