WWE received a blow this week, after learning that Jeff Hardy will require surgery to resolve a torn rotator cuff.

In a post on WWE.com, the company revealed that one half of 'Team Extreme' picked up the injury on last week's episode of Raw, during the Six-Pack challenge designed to settle the number one contender for Miz's IC title.

The younger Hardy brother is expected to go in for surgery next Tuesday, for what WWE's chief doctor Stephen Daquino describes as "a full thickness tear of his supraspinatus tendon", as well as a torn labrum.

WWE offered no timescale for Hardy's eventual return, but the general prognosis for recovery following arthroscopic rotator cuff repair can be as long as six months in worst case scenarios. Such a lengthy lay-off would rule Jeff out of WrestleMania 34, though the company were quick to point out that he could still feature on TV in a different capacity during his convalescence.

"There's lots of crazy ideas", said Hardy. "It inspires me to think a lot more about what I can do and still be entertaining."
