Jerry Lawler 'It's Good To Be The King' DVD Review: 17 Interesting Observations

17. Humble Beginnings

Jerry was born in Memphis Tennessee on November 29, 1949 and grew up in a modest family. Not poor, but just under what you would call average. His father was a factory worker at Ford motor company while his mother stayed at home to take care of family life, such were the standards of the day. Jerry's father received his paycheque every single Friday and the current SmackDown announcer can recall how the biggest one he ever brought home was for $99. Then, his mother would put together the family's budget for the week, setting aside around $25 to feed four mouths. King had one brother, four years his senior. Jerry claims he never has had so much as an argument with him. How very odd for two siblings, especially boys. Then, when Lawler was seven, his father was relocated by Ford to Ohio, where the future Hall Of Famer described how great it was to see something as simple as snow for the first time. Moving home would kickstart King's addiction to sport as he got behind all the major teams from Cleveland after living in Memphis where there was no professional sides.
