John Cena and Nikki Bella's six-year relationship has come to an end, the couple have announced in an interview with US Weekly.

A short, simple statement read: "While this decision was a difficult one, we continue to have a great deal of love and respect for one another. We ask that you respect our privacy during this time in our lives." This was pre-empted on Saturday, when Cena posted a Walt Whitman quote - "we were together. I forget the rest." - to Instagram.

The news comes just over a year after Cena proposed to Nikki in the ring at WrestleMania 33. They have since starred in the second season of Total Bellas, which focused heavily on their relationship, as well as Brie Bella's with Daniel Bryan. Presumably, the split will necessitate a reshuffle on the E! network reality show.

Last month, Cena noted in another interview with Us Weekly that him and Nikki would often go months without seeing each other, so busy were their schedules. Bella is no longer a full-time roster member, but Cena, now a part-timer, is more committed to Hollywood than ever.

Though the circumstances of the split are nobody's business but their own, let's hope both are happy with the decision.
