The current plan for this year’s WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view is for CM Punk to defend his WWE Championship against John Cena in the co-main event, alongside Brock Lesnar vs Triple H.
Punk vs Cena would be a re-match from last year’s WWE SummerSlam main event which ended with neither man holding the belt when Alberto Del Rio cashed in his money in the bank briefcase to steal the title after Punk had beaten Cena and was laid out by Kevin Nash.
F4WOnline.com reports that Punk vs Cena has overtaken prior plans for a CM Punk vs Big Show match for the WWE Title. Although plans can and do change in the WWE all the time, this is the direction they are expected to be heading in and after it was advertised on Monday’s RAW that Cena would be challenging for the WWE Title in his hometown of Boston at September’s Night of Champions pay-per-view, this does seem to be the plan. (Also it would suggest Cena is not going to be victorious).
As of this past weekend, John Cena has no clear direction in storylines and is not currently pencilled in for a match at WWE’s Money in the Bank pay-per-view on July 15th. We half mused yesterday that Cena would become part of the Raw branded Money in the Bank title match at the event (Big Show is the only named confirmed so far but we would expect Kofi Kingston, Dolph Ziggler, Jack Swagger and more to be involved in the multi-man match-up) but a source within the WWE doesn’t expect him to be part of this match. WWE may decide to keep him of the pay-per-view altogether, just as they did in December’s TLC pay-per-view.
On house shows this weekend Cena is facing Show, Tensai and John Laurinaitis (yes, despite him being fired the excuse is that WWE Board of Directors want him to fulfil his “wrestling” commitments) in a handicap main event. Unless WWE make the mistake of putting Cena against Laurinaitis at the pay-per-view again, we suppose he could go against Tensai at Money in the Bank but as WWE Creative are developing a character makeover for Matt Bloom, this seems unlikely.
As of right now, the plan is for Cena to once again be involved in the WWE title picture in the Autumn for the first time in almost a year.
