Kevin Von Erich To Induct Fabulous Freebirds In WWE Hall Of Fame

The latest on this year's WWE Hall Of Fame in Dallas.

It's looking more and more likely that the Fabulous Freebirds, a team that changed tag team wrestling forever, may finally be receiving their well deserved induction into the WWE Hall of Fame this year in Dallas. The Freebirds (Michael Hayes, Terry Gordy and Buddy Roberts) starred all over the country during the 1980s, but many most fondly remember their run as part of World Class Championship Wrestling in Dallas. With the biggest show of the year taking place in the Von Erich family's former territory that the Fabulous once ruled, a Hall of Fame induction is a no-brainer. Clueing everyone in on the fact that this may indeed be happening was Kevin Von Erich on Twitter. He posted a message noting that WWE had given him a call to participate in WrestleMania weekend and that he indeed would be there. https://twitter.com/KevinVonErich/status/696034853406441472 Kevin, along with his brothers (Kerry, David, Chris, and Mike), notoriously feuded with the Freebirds in one of the best storylines in the history of World Class Championship Wrestling. Due to their history together, an induction by Kevin Von Erich makes a lot of sense for all involved. The Von Erichs/Freebirds feud ignited the World Class territory in the mid 1980s. The Freebirds are often seen as the pioneers in popularizing the use of theme music during entrances in pro wrestling. Originally, the team used the song "Free Bird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Later on, Michael Hayes recorded the song "Badstreet USA" for their entrance. Maybe a more widely known fact is that the team popularized what has been known ever since as the "Freebird Rule." This is the situation where a team of more than 2 people are allowed to hold the tag team titles, collectively, and choose 2 people from the team on any given night to defend the belts. This is the same principle that The New Day uses today in WWE. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkbznhReHVI As we noted previously, the Freebirds are expected for a WWE Hall Of Fame induction this year, along with JBL, former WWE diva Jacqueline, Charles "The Godfather" Wright, celebrity Regis Philbin, with the already announced Sting as the headliner. Other names are also expected but the ones above are what we know so far.
