So for those of you not inside the continental United States, Mick "Mankind - Cactus Jack - Dude Love" Foley is currently touring across the USA doing his newest stand-up comedy routine, affectionately titled "Tales From Wrestling Past." This past Wednesday evening I was finally (and The Rock would say FIIIINALLY!) able to catch Foley's comedy routine, something I have been trying to do for nearly 2 years now. For whatever the reason, this time my stars all aligned, and alongside a lifelong friend and fellow wrestling fan since we were children, I was ultimately able to make it to Foley's show, driving some 5 hours round-trip for a night full of old-school wrestling nostalgia, as recalled by one of the industry's great legends, and one of it's true gentlemen. Foley! Foley! Foley! As it should, his show began with Foley making a somewhat un-dramatic entrance into the evening's small venue, a comedy club called The Funny Bone in Columbus, Ohio. But...his entrance was complete with his WWE theme song, blaring through the club's limited speaker system in it's full authenticity, complete with the car crash opening and all that noise we are so familiar with. Foley then immediately teased the "cheap pop" routine, saying "it was great to be here in"...(dramatic pause)....and then nothing! He had already baited us from this early get-go, but vowed to save the city name and state punch line, a bit that he is so famous for, for a time later in the show. And so his routine commenced, and it was actually quite different from what you would expect. Not so much a comedy routine, but really more of a storytelling sit-in, rich with vivid recollections of funny situations spanning his entire career, from his days of wrestling in his backyard at home, to the time he spent on the independent circuits, on over to the brutal year or two in Japan he spent with his mentor Terry Funk, and then finally back home again in the WWE, where he was recently inducted into The Hall Of Fame.
