Stephanie McMahon Attacks CM Punk In Personal Smear

WWE smears former champion with a dig about his family.

Stephanie McMahon has called CM Punk a quitter, in a promo that also made a personal dig at his fractured family life. WWE opened their Chicago Raw presentation with the Authority leader. She immediately played up to the chants for hometown hero CM Punk, even though the chanting was far lower in volume than expected. Taking the microphone, Stephanie said she didn't understand why people chanted for quitters. She then made reference to quitting your job when it gets hard and not sticking it out. Her most controversial comment however, was about CM Punk's family. It is well known that Punk has had fractious family relationship, including taking a restraining order out against his mother in 2013. Stephanie's Raw promo included a line about "quitting your family." This was possibly a direct dig at Punk, a line designed to get under his skin. The personal nature of it had to be cutting for the former Champion. You also have to wonder what his wife AJ Lee made of it, given that she's still a WWE performer and was watching backstage. Punk has had falling outs with mother, brother and father over the years. You can't really say that he quit these family members, but he certainly made the decision to have nothing to do with them. Maybe it was coincidence that Stephanie referenced "quitting your family" when she was talking about Punk, but there's also a good chance she was deliberately taking a nasty shot against him. Criticism of Punk quitting his job is fine, but taking personal attacks is perhaps crossing the line. There's no need for WWE to go there, they don't know what exactly went on in the privacy of Punk's family life. However, this is WWE's style when it comes to smearing people. They can be brutal. It was expected that things would get ugly after CM Punk launched a legal letter to his former employer in early September. It now appears as if the McMahon family have fired back in devastating fashion.
