The Real Reason WWE May Be Kicked Out Of California

WWE’s finances weren’t remotely threatened by a scathing John Oliver diatribe the week before their biggest event of the year. They weren’t threatened by countless Network cancellations during Year One of a decade-long deal with the Saudi Arabian Sports Authority. Raw and SmackDown Live will earn billions in television rights even after Baron Corbin’s ‘Deep Six’ finisher started to sound like a description of Raw's viewing figure count the longer he stayed on top of the brand.

But WWE’s bottom line could face a hammer blow heavier than Five-Star Cody’s hardest swing thanks to a change far less ostentatious than a prop throne. Prepare your own weaponry, comments section, because Dave Meltzer was the one to break it, too.

As identified by WhatCulture.com’s Michael Sidgwick, Meltzer’s developed the accidental habit of burying the lead in the Wrestling Observer of late. The man - in spite (or because) of social media digs or his own weariness - cranks out content at an alarming rate, perhaps making it hard to still see the steak before the sizzle.

He recently misread the anxiety of the fanbase at large when he snuck the important confirmation of Daniel Bryan’s in-ring return into one of the very last sections of the newsletter rather than f*cking leading with the thing, and did the same again here when foreshadowed the fascinating machinations of potential state bill that may soon be passed down in California.

In tribute to Meltzer’s inimitable style, consider this article will feature that prominent paragraph from his seminal weekly offering on the third page rather than the first. You won’t believe the profound ramifications of an otherwise dry bit of legislation...
