Barry Windham turned on The Total Package and joined the Horsemen, leading to a feud between Flair and Luger over the NWA Championship. The two met at the Great American Bash but the match was stopped due to Lugers excessive bleeding, which meant the Nature Boy retained the belt. This led to a rematch at Starrcade. Luger works Flairs arm, but the champion retaliates, taking aim at the challengers leg. Luger tries to lock in the Torture Rack but he struggles to get Flair up, allowing the Nature Boy to counter the submission into a roll-up, with Flair using the ropes for leverage as he stole the win. This was Luger at his unquestioned best, while Flair shows why he is regarded as one of the greatest.
