If you're curious about the actual history of the mugshot, you should know that it became a common practice of police in the 1880s and was used as a method to create a photographic database of criminals for law enforcement. You could make the case that it's now around for the viewing pleasure of millions, especially for those that walk the red carpet and entertain us endlessly.
