WWE: 10 Fascinating Backstage Facts About Sting

8. The Drug And Alcohol Problems In His Failed Marriage

It wasn't just steroid abuse taking a toll on Sting, he was contending with drug and alcohol abuse too. For much of the first half of the 90's he was shaping up as your stereotypical wrestling tragedy €” painkillers, muscle relaxers, alcohol and a failing marriage as he refused to enter rehab. Borden admits that his life was spiralling out of control, revealing that he was lost in this destructive behaviour for at least a couple of years. Despite pleas from his family, he refused to get help, believing he was tough enough to overcome his demons on his own. He wasn't. "I begged and pleaded with my wife. I said, 'Look. I'll stop. I'll stop.' And I couldn't do it. About 30 days went by, and things really started to go downhill." Thankfully, Sting managed to turn his life around. In the summer of 1998, Borden found God. It gave him the focus he needed to cut substance abuse out of his life, helping him get clean and refocus on pro wrestling. The decision has probably extended his career by a significant amount of years. Unfortunately, it only extended his failing marriage in the short term. Sting is now divorced but remains a beacon of sobriety and moral living.
